Chinese New Year at Saint Felix

Saint Felix boarders and Dragons' Nursery recently enjoyed their annual celebration of Chinese New Year.

Both the Dragons' Nursery pupils and the Boarding students celebrated the Chinese New Year.

As well as enjoying Chinese food, the children in the Dragons' Nursery also found out what Chinese animal they are according to the year in which they were born. They also sang Chinese songs, researched Chinese writing and words, and even got the chance to dress up as a Chinese dragon. To complete the oriental theme, traditional lanterns and decorations were put up around the Nursery.

Lisa Laughland, Nursery Supervisor, said: “The children have really enjoyed learning about the Chinese culture, and trying out different foods and tastes. Each child has a weekly cooking session, and we like to vary what we cook so Chinese New Year was a great opportunity to do that.

Meanwhile proceedings and events for the boarders were coordinated by upper sixth form students – in particular, Ray Lai, Emily Leung and Kevin Wang. A large group of Saint Felix’s Chinese students spent the afternoon cooking a traditional Chinese meal, decorating the dining room, planning games and making red pockets with messages inside. The meal was followed by some traditional games, and Ray Lai later gave a traditional Chinese singing performance whch was throughly enjoyed by all.

Housemaster, Tim O’Connell, took part in the event: “We have a lot of overseas students here at Saint Felix, so the Chinese New Year gave us the perfect opportunity to celebrate something which is really important to a lot of our pupils. We all had a great time, and those of us that didn’t know so much about the Chinese culture got to experience some really interesting things.”
