Art and Design Technology benefit from a newly-completed room that is spacious and light. All aspects of art and design are covered and experimentation using a wide variety of media is encouraged. The curriculum covers everything from basic drawing techniques to constructing sets for school plays and taking part in community projects. The children are encouraged to bring in work that they have completed at home and are passionate about. They are also encouraged to take part in competitions. Work is displayed throughout the Junior School and is exhibited more widely through exhibitions.
Year 3 (UII) Art
Colour and Pattern

Pupils experiment with colour mixing, tone and shade.

They explore pattern, shape and space and create large abstract paintings.
3D work in Clay
Pupils enjoy cross curricular links with their history topic ‘The Egyptians’ and make a canopic jar out of clay.

Still Life
Pupils develop their observational and recording skills. Each year a themed still life is set up and they use a range of mark making tools and are encouraged to work on a large scale. Our theme in 2009 is The Toy Box.

Textiles
Pupils design and make a wall hanging by using a range of fabrics, beads, ribbons and embroidery threads.

They develop their sewing skills by learning a variety of stitches and techniques.
Competitions
Each year we take part in the Young Art East Anglia Competition which raises funds for Cancer Research UK.

This year the theme was ‘Awesome’ and we are delighted to have had the work of 12 pupils from Years 3 and 4 selected to be on display in the Peter Pears Gallery in Aldeburgh.

Year 4 (LIII) Art
Journeys

Abstract work based on journeys
Self Portraits
A range of observational studies using lead pencil, chalk and charcoal.

Year 5 (Middle III) Art
‘Water’
The class has studied the painting the ‘Bigger Splash’ by David Hockney. They have worked on creating paintings of themselves swimming in the school pool using acrylic paint. They have looked at how water changes constantly and how it can be interpreted in different media. The class has moved on to printing techniques using the same theme of water and they are making block prints. They will continue to develop this project into weaving and creative embroidery.
Year 6 (Upper III) Art ‘Portraits’
The pupils visited the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge where they were shown by museum specialist staff how to view a painting and try to understand what the artist was trying to convey. They then worked on self-portraits using acrylic paint to reflect what they had learned.
In order to try to understand the structure of the face, they have made a profile portrait using papier-mache, layering up paper so that it reflects the undulations and structure of the features. This project will be continued by looking at sculpture and ways of creating three-dimensional images of a self-portrait.

Year 3 (UII) DT
To date the pupils have carried out a project to design and make photograph frames and another to design and make packaging for a product.

Year 5 (Middle III) Design & Technology
Tudor Buildings
The class has looked at the nature of Tudor buildings in history lessons and the pupils are re-creating the style of typical Tudor buildings making a money box based on this theme. Health, safety, and the safe use of tools are all incorporated into the project.
Year 6 (Upper III) Design & Technology
‘Clocks’
The children have looked at the artist Henri Matisse and his Jazz period. They have made collages from his work and designed their own colourful shaped clocks based on his original designs. Cutting and shaping wood is part of this challenge and arranging pieces to create a successful workable result.
