Home Curriculum Key Stage 2 Geography

Geography

Our aims in Geography are to develop the children’s knowledge and understanding of the world we live in through investigation and to encourage an appreciation of the world around us.  We aim to provide a geography curriculum which is interesting, broad, balanced and relevant.  Throughout the Junior School the children learn to apply the skills of map reading to globes, atlases and large scale maps through map work, orienteering in the school grounds and field work.  Field work is encouraged in the school grounds and each year group has at least one geography field trip outside school during the year.  Our Year 5 (Middle III) pupils study the River Blyth from its source to the mouth and Year 6 (Upper III) pupils study coastal erosion at Dunwich.  The pupils are taught to develop the skills needed to undertake geographical investigations and enquiry through map work, taking photographs, image interpretation, problem solving and ICT.  We use a wide variety of resources to stimulate the children’s interest in the world around them.  The main areas of study are: Weather and Investigating our local area in Year 3 (Upper II), A village in India and Water in Year 4 (Lower III), Rivers and Climate in Year 5 (Middle III) and Mountains and Coasts in Year 6 (Upper III).
