Latin
Latin at Saint Felix is a three year course leading to a GCSE through the OCR board. It follows the Cambridge Latin Course from Books 1 to 4, complementing this with a formal grammar grounding comprising the first three declensions and simple verb structures. By the end of Year 9 pupils will have encountered verbs in the present, imperfect and perfect tenses. By the end of Year 10 pupils are ready to study the GCSE set texts and to practise unseen translation from the Latin at the same level.Compared against the modern foreign languages studied at Saint Felix Latin is a shorter and more demanding course, but those pupils who undertake the subject and apply themselves find that they are better equipped for the more complex parts of grammar, both in these and English. Wherever possible, reference is made to grammar and vocabulary within modern European languages in order to aid inter-subject learning and to show how Latin is a common link, valuable in life beyond the classroom. Â
More than anything else GCSE Latin teaches oneself about the variety and beauty of English. It is not for the faint-hearted though: Fortuna fortibus favet.
