Geography
AS and A2
We are currently introducing the new AQA syllabus at AS. Core modules on fluvial studies and population dynamics are complemented by two optional modules; hot environments and the politics of food give students an opportunity to examine issues of contemporary relevance in depth, and to develop their views. A skills paper considers investigative, cartographic, graphical, ICT and statistical areas, all of which are taught as part of the main topics rather than in isolation. Residential fieldwork is undertaken as part of this, in a contrasting locality to that of the student's home area.
At A2 Coasts, Hazards/Geomorphology and Cold Environments make up the Physical Geography. The approach is a synoptic one, with students being encouraged to draw together various areas of their knowledge to increase their depth of understanding and to show how these topics are connected. Resource Management, issues concerning Cities and Tourism/Recreation are the Human Geography topics studied. A field study is undertaken by candidates and written up by the second half of the Lent term.
