Design Technology

A and As level are the route into and through KS5, largely exposed through product design.  This 3D design course is intended to reflect the activities of professional designers and the creative design process uses a wide range of materials, methods and ideas to satisfy human needs.

You will develop a capacity for problem solving, logic and visual communication that spans such areas as architecture, industrial design, interior design, graphics, furniture, jewellery and fashion.

As leaders not followers, our students designers will work with wood, metal, plastics and other modelling materials but every craft or manufacturing process is open for use, scrutiny, discourse and debate along the way.

Assessment is through written papers 40%, and then product analysis, ‘design and make challenge’ and a longer ‘design and make assignment’ 60%.

The course encourages awareness, understanding and application of economic, political, social, aesthetic, cultural, health, moral and environmental factors.  It can appear all consuming whilst employing specialist skills and knowledge across other subject disciplines including management and philosophy.

This creative activity according to Koestler, fits into the domains of artistic originality, scientific discovery and comic inspiration and such can be both hard work and fun.
