Saint Felix School, Southwold
Scholarships and Exhibitions 2012/13
While the Headmaster is able to make recommendations, all awards of scholarships, exhibitions and bursaries have to be approved by the Governing Body.
All candidates will be invited to spend the whole day at Saint Felix. There will be an opportunity for a full tour of the school and arrangements can be made for candidates, who would like to stay overnight, to do so.

Academic Scholarships for candidates aged 11+ and 13+
Scholarships will be awarded, for entry in September 2012, to outstanding candidates who demonstrate flair and the potential to excel in their academic studies. All applicants will be expected to sit competitive academic examination papers. The school is seeking high calibre candidates, who will contribute very positively and proactively to the life of the school community. The maximum award offered to scholars will be 50% of the fees.
Academic Exhibitions for candidates aged 11+ and 13+
An exhibition is an award given for candidates who show promise but do not quite attain the exacting standards demanded of scholars. All applicants will be expected to sit competitive academic examination papers. Exhibitioners, like scholars, will be expected to set themselves very high standards of work and to contribute positively to the life of the school. The maximum award to exhibitioners is 25% of the fees.
Margaret Isabella Gardiner Scholarship for candidates aged 11+ and 13+
Outstanding candidates may be eligible for this prestigious award, worth up to 75% of the fees. This scholarship will be awarded only to a candidate of sufficiently high calibre and not necessarily on an annual basis.
Examination papers
Applicants will be asked to take examination papers in English, Mathematics and Science. They will also sit Cognitive Ability tests. Subject papers will be based on topics closely linked to the Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 curriculum. Past subject papers will be available for external candidates. Candidates may also have a short interview with a member of the Scholarship Selection Committee.
Music Awards for candidates aged 9 years to 14+
These will be awarded on the basis of an audition, voice test and interview with the Director of Music and members of the Scholarship Selection Committee. The maximum award will be 20% of the fees plus lessons of 35 minutes duration for up to two instruments. Further details can be obtained from the Director of Music, who will be pleased to talk informally to parents, prior to the submission of a formal application for a scholarship or exhibition. Successful candidates will be expected to support the life of the Music Department whole-heartedly and participate enthusiastically in orchestras, choirs and ensembles, as appropriate.
Arrangements for Music auditions
Candidates will be asked to offer two instruments, one of which should be an orchestral instrument. If younger candidates are unable to do this, then a voice test should be offered as an alternative. Candidates will be expected to have achieved a specific standard, dependent on their age.
Performing Arts Scholarships for candidates aged 13+
These awards are open to candidates who excel in at least two of the following disciplines:
- Drama
- Dance
- Music (including singing)
Candidates will be asked to perform two pieces of prepared material in their two disciplines. They will be interviewed and may be asked to perform some unprepared exercises.
Successful candidates will be expected to support the Performing Arts department very positively and participate in all appropriate productions and activities. The maximum award given to scholars will be 50% of the fees and the maximum award to exhibitioners will be 25% of the fees.
Sports Scholarships for 11+ and 13+
Applicants for sports scholarships at 11+ or 13+ should offer a range of sporting talents. These can include Athletics, Football, Hockey, Netball, Rugby or Tennis. There should be evidence of success in competitions and events for both age groups.
Pupils at 11+ should be playing at club level in at least one sport and show a committed attitude to further participation outside the minimum ‘A’ team school level sport.
Pupils at 13+ should have been selected for county/regional level sport and be playing at club level in at least one sport.
Successful candidates will be expected to represent the school in teams, which reflect their personal expertise and to support, enthusiastically, the sporting life of the school. Candidates will be asked to perform a number of practical tests in their chosen sports and to undergo a fitness assessment. The maximum award given to scholars will be 50% of the fees and the maximum award to exhibitioners will be 25% of the fees.
Swimming Scholarships
Swimming Scholarships are awarded to pupils who swim in the school squad and are dependent on the level of times gained. There are different awards for individual county, regional and national times. Further details can be obtained from the Headmaster or from the Swimming Coach.
SIXTH FORM
For students entering the Sixth Form, a number of scholarships and exhibitions are available for talented applicants in the following areas: Academic Studies, Design & Technology (Phipps Award), Drama, Music, Sport and Visual Arts. These scholarships and exhibitions will be awarded as the result of a competitive examination, audition or trial. Full details of the Sixth Form academic scholarships and exhibitions and those available in Art, Drama, Music and Sport are included in the Sixth Form Scholarship Booklet and below. The maximum award given to scholars will be 50% of the fees and the maximum award to exhibitioners will be 25% of the fees.
Assessment for Sixth Form awards in Drama, Design Technology, Music and the Visual Arts will be undertaken either in November 2011 or January 2012.
Examination papers for Sixth Form Academic Scholarships and Exhibitions
External candidates will be asked to sit written scholarship papers in two subjects that they plan to take in the Sixth Form. These papers will be based on topics covered during the GCSE course. Candidates should indicate their current GCSE specifications and topics covered to date. They will also have formal interviews with the Heads of Departments of the subjects they intend to take at AS/A2 and with the Head of Sixth Form. They will also have an interview with members of the Scholarship Selection Committee.
Design & Technology Scholarship (Phipps Award) for Sixth Form Candidates
Thanks to a magnificent donation by an Old Felician, the Phipps Award will be offered to exceptionally gifted students entering the Sixth Form, to enable them to study Design and Technology at Advanced Level at Saint Felix. Students will follow a Product Design course, working with wood, metal, plastics or ceramics.
Candidates will be asked to bring with them a portfolio of their work which will probably include some of their GCSE coursework. Each candidate will be asked to do some practical work as part of the scholarship examination and should also expect to be asked questions about the work of designers who have influenced their own design ideas.
Awards, contributing up to 50% of the fees, will be made to those applicants who demonstrate, via competitive examination and practical evidence, both innovative flair and the potential to excel.
Drama Scholarship for Sixth Form Candidates
This will comprise a variety of different dramatic exercises. Each candidate will be asked to perform two pieces of prepared, but contrasting, material but should anticipate that unprepared exercises will be set as well.
Candidates will be asked about the plays in which they have been involved and about the type of drama and the playwrights that they enjoy. Successful candidates will be expected to support the drama department very positively and participate in all appropriate productions. Candidates interested in stage management, lighting and sound will also be considered.
The maximum award given to scholars will be 50% of the fees and the maximum award to exhibitioners will be 25% of the fees.
Music Scholarship for Sixth Form Candidates
These will be awarded on the basis of an audition, voice test and interview with the Director of Music and members of the Scholarship Selection Committee.
Candidates will be asked to offer two instruments, one of which should be an orchestral instrument. At this level candidates are expected to have gained Grade 6 on at least one instrument or voice.
Successful candidates will be expected to support proactively the life of the Music Department and participate enthusiastically in orchestras, choirs and ensembles as appropriate.
The maximum award given to scholars will be 50% of the fees and the maximum award to exhibitioners will be 25% of the fees plus lessons of 35 minutes duration on up to two instruments.
Sports Scholarship for Sixth Form Candidates
Applicants for sports scholarships may either offer a specific sport such as Athletics, Football, Hockey, Netball, Rugby or Tennis or a range of sporting talents. At this level candidates are expected to have represented their county in at least one sport in the current academic year.
Successful candidates will be expected to represent the school in teams, which reflect their personal expertise and to support, enthusiastically, the sporting life of the school. Visual Arts Scholarships for Sixth Form Candidates
Art Scholarship
Candidates will be asked to bring with them a portfolio of their work. This can be a collection of drawings, paintings and 3D work by the candidate, done either at school or at home. Most candidates will have GCSE Art, Design and/or Photography coursework to bring to the examination. Each candidate will be asked to do some practical art work as part of the scholarship examination and should also expect to be asked questions about the work of artists who have influenced their own art work.
The maximum award given to scholars will be 50% of the fees and the maximum award to exhibitioners will be 25% of the fees.
Photography Scholarship
It is desirable that candidates will have studied the subject at GCSE level and evidence of that work should be brought to interview – both finished pieces (minimum 6) and supporting work and research.
Candidates will be asked to carry out two tasks:
1. Practical (set before the interview date)
Six photographs in response to a set question.
2. Visual Analysis
Written response to a set of questions based on a selection of images by Photographers.
Founder’s Scholarships
Founder’s Scholarships will be awarded at the Governors’ discretion and are subject to close scrutiny. They may be awarded to those who fulfil one or more of the criteria below, for example:
Further financial assistance to a candidate entering the school who would be unable otherwise to accept the offer of a scholarship/exhibition.
Support for a candidate entering the school who, for some reason, missed the scholarship examinations, but fulfils the criteria of excellence outlined above.
An existing member of the school who performs exceptionally well in GCSE examinations in order to enable him/her to stay in the Sixth Form.
An existing member of the school who has obtained excellent marks in class and then performs extremely well in end of year examinations.
Conditions for those who accept awards at Saint Felix
i. All those in receipt of awards will be expected to play a full part in the life of the school and to work to the best of their ability.
ii. Anyone who fails to maintain the standards expected of a scholar or exhibitioner may, after due warning and having been given time to improve performance, have his/her scholarship withdrawn.
iii. Those offered scholarships and exhibitions at 11+ and 13+ will retain them until the end of their GCSE course, subject to points i and ii above.
iv. Sixth Form scholarships extend throughout the two-year Sixth Form course.
The number of scholarships and exhibitions awarded at each age group will reflect the calibre of the candidates who sit the examinations, auditions and trials.
Bursaries
A bursary may only be granted to parents of a current pupil who experience temporary financial difficulties in paying the fees. All applications for bursary assistance must be discussed with the Headmaster in the first instance. A means test form has to be completed by all applicants and an established formula is used to work out the maximum percentage discount that can be offered parents.
Remissions for siblings
No discount for first and second child, 15% for the third child and 85% for the fourth.
Remissions for children of staff
These may be available for staff, providing there is room in the appropriate year group. These are not automatic remissions but discretionary ones. 25% for full-time staff and pro-rata for part-time staff.
Remissions for the children of Old Felicians
A 5% remission is given to the children of Old Felicians.
Remissions for Service families
An agreed percentage is given to service families.
