PTA QUIZ n CURRY NIGHT
| Quiz 'n' Curry Success! |
|
The Saint Felix PTA held its annual ‘Quiz ‘n’ Curry Night’ on Friday 21 January, resulting in a victory that took everyone by surprise. ‘Handel Played Rugby’, a team made up of staff from the PE and Music Departments snatched a win from the more academic teams of the Senior and Junior Schools, Fran D’Alcorn’s ‘Fran-kly Brilliant’ and Julia Campbell’s ‘Junior Allstars’. ‘The Collaborators’, a team featuring the Headmaster, bursary staff and school nurses, finished close behind in second place. Various parents’ teams were also left in ‘Handel’s’ wake! Head of Music Andrew Jenkins put together his team of Vetta Wise, Tim and Laura O’Connell, and Jo Greenacre with her husband and father. They were stunned when they took an early lead. Mr O’Connell said: “We just went along for a fun evening and to support the PTA and realised half way through we were in with a shout. I can't believe we won !"
The Quiz n Curry Night is an annual event and was this year again hosted in an able and hilarious manner by Sue Greenfield who asked ten rounds of questions on subjects from film quotes, art and literature to sport, news events and ....rabbits ! This year eight teams of up to ten people took part including several teams made up of parents of pupils in all areas of the school. Everyone enjoyed fantastic curries provided by Brian Herrington and his kitchen staff and a bar added to everyone’s enjoyment of the evening.
The event raised £529 for the PTA of which a large portion will finance playground equipment for the younger years within the senior school, something which the students themselves have requested.
CHRISTMAS FAYRE
This year's Christmas Fayre was hugely successful and enjoyable and raised around £1500 for both the PTA and causes supported by children throughout the school within their tutor groups.
For the first time the PTA invited students to run games and stalls for their own charities and many threw themselves into the task raising cash for good causes as diverse as Lepra, the RSPCA and Shelter
The event took place in the sports hall again but this time Santa's Grotto took pride of place on stage where elves escorted little people to visit Santa in his own winter wonderland overlooking the Central Cafe, where many enjoyed mulled wine, minced pies, tea and cakes.
There were many pocket money games to keep the youngsters amuses, from Name the Reindeer and the Sweetie Tombola to a Lucky Christmas Dip and sand sculpting. Meanwhile parents did lots of Christmas shopping amongst the high quality gift stalls at the far end of the hall.
Impromptu Chrismtas buskers kept everyone entertained for the afternoon and managed to raise fill a few buckets with loose change, partly for charites and school projects of their own, and partly towards PTA funds. |
SUMMER FAYRE - Saturday May 22nd 2010
We were lucky enough to enjoy the most glorious weather for our Medieval Summer Fayre. Hundreds turned up to enjoy maypole dancing, a cake, flower and herb contest, fun dog show, Punch and Judy and folk dancing by the Barley Brigg Morris Dancers.
The theme was a rural village fayre of the Middle Ages and the children enjoyed many activities that were educational as well as fun at pocket money prices. One of the most popular games was Knock Your Block Off in which little knights dressed up as 7ft versions to knock each other's helmets off with inflatable jousting poles. (The adults enjoyed this one very much too !)
Jo Greenacre ran a popular version for the littles ones with hobby horses, woggles and some buckets and sponges, while the greasy pole was very busy with children of all ages. There was a Medieval Scavenger Quest ending at the climbing wall where competitors had to rescue the damsel in distress, plus heraldry plotting, horseshoe quoits, ploughman's tombola, crossbow archery, wooden cow milking, rocking horse rides, bowling for the pig plus a Real Ale tent and 'King Henry The Ate' Cafe on the green outside the dining hall. The fayre raised around £550 which will be used by the PTA to fund projects for the children throughout the school.

QUIZ AND CURRY NIGHT FEBRUARY 26th 2010
Our Quiz and Curry Night was a great success with eleven teams of nearly a hundred people doing battle. The event raised a little over £400 which will be used to fund projects for the children through the Friends.
Teams of staff, sixth formers, parents and friends answered questions on subjects ranging from sport and science to French cheese and movie clips. The eventual winners were The Yolkheads, a team largely made up of Bronte parents, with The Bewildered, a senior staff team, in second and Campbell’s Souper Team, including David Ward, Julia Campbell and Doreen Whittington and their families, were third. Presenting The Yolkheads with their prize David Ward said :”It’s good to know that the nursery parents are bringing the brains on through the school !”
The Lavender Hill Mob, including staff member Christine Tyler, won the ‘Heads and Bums’ round for bizarre guesses answers to weird questions. The best sixth form team was ‘Indomie’ and silliest answer prize went to ‘Spring Cabbage’ made up of PTA members Sally and Gill and Clough parents, Andrew and Julia, who thought a movie clip featuring Princess Leia from Star Wars insulting ‘nerf-herders’ came from Gone With the Wind !
Thanks to Sue Greenfield who again performed brilliantly as Quizmaster, Brian and the kitchen staff who provided a wonderful curry meal and Frans Bohncke ran the bar all evening.
The Quiz and Curry Night is a biannual event so will be back in 2012. Meanwhile look out for details on our next fundraiser, our film night, on Thursday March 18th and the summer fayre on Saturday May 22nd. Details on the forthcoming events page.
THE WINTER WONDERLAND CHRISTMAS FAYRE
December 2009
The ‘Winter Wonderland’ themed Christmas Fayre was a huge success raising more than £1,500 for the PTA’s funds for school projects.
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang brought Santa to the Fayre, escorted by his elves. He then spent the afternoon in a lovely, wintry grotto chatting to nearly 80 children and giving out early presents.
Saint Felix singers and musicians peformed all afternoon on the stage in the main hall, raising in excess of £100 for their forthcoming visit to Salzburg, while a childrens’ entertainer performed for the youngest visitors in the Silcox Theatre. There were plenty of pocket-money games, including ‘Knock Santa down the Chimney’, ‘P..P..P..Pick up a Penguin’ and ‘Name the Reindeer’ and the competitions, especially Best Dressed Elf and a Snowman colouring contest were well supported.
The Christmas Café beneath the stage was central to the festivities this year, and many parents enjoyed mulled wine and mince pies after a busy afternoon browsing the many trade stalls.
Headmaster David Ward said later "The Christmas Fayre this year was an outstanding success,. There was a fantastic atmosphere and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves very much indeed. I’m already looking forward to next year’s!"
